Hearing Test

Hearing is a complex process which involves transformation of sounds in various forms of energy. When sounds reach the eardrum, the acoustic energy is converted to vibration (mechanical energy). The vibration is enhanced by the middle ear bones and the energy is transmitted to the cochlear through the oval window. The movement of the oval window will cause a motion of the cochlear fluid. The fluid movement distorts (bend) the inner ear hair cells which sit on the basilar membrane. The hair cells convert the mechanical/hydraulic energy into electrical impulses. Those impulses are transmitted through the nervous system to the brain where they are finally perceived and interpreted as sound.

Brisbane Hearing uses a testing battery which follow the sound transmission process in the ear to diagnosis any possible hearing problems.

Otoscopy
Prior to any hearing test, otoscopy inspects any object obstructing the sound passage in the ear canal. Any signs of outer ear pathology will be noted.

Tympanometry
It is a measurement of sound movement and sound reflection through the middle ear over a pressure range. This information can be used to determine the status of the tympanic membrane and the middle ear condition, such as Middle ear effusion, Eustachian tube dysfunction, and perforated eardrum.

Otoacoustic Emission
By measurement the specific frequency echo sounds ‘produced’ by the inner ear hair cells, the condition of the inner ear hair cells in various locations can be revealed.

Pure Tone Audiogram
Commonly referred as “hearing test”. It is a procedure of measuring of a specific tone finally perceived by the brain. It involves measuring the lowest hearing thresholds at each frequency on each ear. The testing frequencies are choosing to most important to hearing and understanding speech ranging from 250Hz to 8000 Hz.

Speech discrimination
Hearing damage affect people differently. Some individuals with the same degree of hearing loss demonstrated different degrees of difficulty hearing and understanding speech. Speech test, which require the patient to hear and repeat specific words at various testing speech levels, allow us to understand t your functional hearing which can reflect to real-life performance.

Did you know?
As part of the Commonwealth hearing service program, we offer free screening and full diagnostic hearing test to all pensioners and veterans. To arrange your Free Hearing Screening appointment, phone 3344 3000 to speak to our friendly staff.

What if I am not a pensioner or veteran?
A consultation fee of $81.50 will be charged. Our testing fee is one of the lowest in Brisbane. The fee will cover the audiologist's time spent on testing. We do not promote "FREE TESTS" to everyone. With no need to cover the cost of offering free testing, we can keep our service fee and hearing aid prices as low as possible.
